Spinal Reconstruction: Clinical Examples of Applied Basic Science, Biomechanics and Engineering

With an ever-expanding array of biomaterials and implant units showing within the box, this resource is helping surgeons verify and make the most of the newest applied sciences to enhance the reconstruction of the backbone and increase the reconstitution of diseased spinal segments. With illustrative descriptions of particular medical situations, this consultant is helping surgeons choose the simplest units and fabrics for reconstructive methods and considers matters in biocompatibility, biostability, and structure-function relationships for more desirable sufferer results and mobility.

Setting out deliberately to emulate the successful reduction of mortality on convict ships that carried adults with very few infants or children — the most vulnerable sectors of every population — the agencies responsible for emigration from the 1830s experimented with ways to reduce deaths and improve well-being. The most effective life-saving measures on land before 1900 were preventative, in an age when prevention, not cure, was the catchword. These strategies, particularly in the last four decades of the 19th century, were mainly of an engineering or socio-environmental nature: commitment to improving sanitation, housing, clean drinking water, personal hygiene, and diet.

Appendices to General Reports of the CLEC. 41 LIFE and DEATH in the AGE of SAIL dedication to the ‘sanitary idea’ were, and remain, the keystones to reducing adult and child mortality in an industrialising society. Most important, perhaps, is the experience of infants in the maritime environment. Children under the age of one year, like their cousins on land, failed spectacularly to share the life-saving benefits of their parents and older siblings.

It is evident that if we are to further our understanding of disease both on land and at sea, our focus must be directed at the health and mortality of young children. Embodying the experience of thousands of parents travelling to the other side of the world in the 19th century, Sarah Brunskill’s cry of grief three weeks into her three-month voyage to South Australia, ten days after the burial at sea of both of her children, echoes throughout this book: I never look at the sea without thinking of and lamenting our dear children.
