Tolstoy was not to give his final answer to this question until his late essay on the topic, What is Art? (1898). In another important episode with the senior class, as the evening gloom set in around the classroom, Tolstoy, frustrated with his previous attempts to teach Russian history, began telling the story of Russia, starting with the most recent history, with some success. He writes: I have also made other experiments in teaching modern history, and they have been very successful. I told them the history of the Crimean campaign, and the reign of Emperor Nicholas, and the year 1812.
While abroad Tolstoy met a number of leading intellectuals and political figures, including the exiled Russian revolutionary Herzen, the French socialist Proudhon and Julius Froebel, the nephew of the famous pedagogue Friedrich Froebel. Of meeting Tolstoy, Froebel noted in his memoirs that Tolstoy had remarked that at that time, unlike the population of continental Europe, the Russian people had as yet not been corrupted by a damaging system of national education. indd 25 9/28/2010 12:21:07 PM 26 Leo Tolstoy Progress in Russia must emanate from national education, which will give better results in our country than in Germany, because the Russian people are not yet perverted, whereas the Germans resemble a child has been for several years undergoing a wrong education.

He favors a student who lodges with him and then reduces the sensitive protagonist to tears, giving him the lowest pass mark. During his time at University, Nicholas’ reflections highlight the pretence of adult life, from the perspective of the innocent bravado of an adolescent trying to grow up.
