Asian American students, along with African American, Native American, and Latino students, demanded "ethnic studies, open admissions, and a redefinition of the education system" (25).

In contrast, South Asia and America have been far more distant associates. While the Japanese, Korean, and Vietnam conflicts have convoluted life in America in the twentieth century, affecting every individual and institution and inscribing indelible chapters in modern American history, there has been no remotely comparable direct military action associated with South Asia.
