In 1926 Heisenberg and two of his colleagues, German physicists Max Born and Ernst Pascual Jordan, published a theory that combined the principles of quantum theory with the classical theory of light (called electrodynamics). It seems that if one accepts that there can be no action-at-a-distance (i.e. no signal or information that can travel faster than light), and that properties of any physical system exist independently of our choice to observe them (both of which are plausible assumptions), then quantum mechanics is actually incomplete--it does not make predictions that are in accord with our observation of physical facts. The pool balls obey simple classical trajectories, assuming the absence of non-uniformities on the table, which consist of straight lines interrupted by reflection off of the sides of the table. Conversely, to determine a wave’s frequency with great precision, we must sample it over many cycles, which means we lose view of its amplitude at any given moment. An excellent overview is that of string theorist, Brian Greene, in his book The Elegant Universe. (Recent developments since 1997 indicate that superstring theory may itself be a subset of an even more comprehensive theory, M-brane theory, which adds yet another compact dimension to superstring theory.) In both quantum field theory and superstring theory, the quantum field excitations or string representations of particles have no intrinsic inertia.

Just remember that all of these competing interpretations make the exact same predictions, so for all practical purposes they are the same. Schroedinger's famous thought experiment was similar to that described above. The wave model of the electron allowed Austrian physicist Erwin Schr�dinger to develop a mathematical method of determining the probability that an electron will be at a particular place at a certain time. This is ongoing research and connected with string theory research, since, up to now, string theories are the only ones that have come up with both the quantum levels needed to describe particles and also to quantize gravity.
